Adriennes

156 Orchard St., nr. Rivington St.; 212-228-9618; adriennesny.com

Downtown brides come to Gina Pedone's adorable salon for one-on-one couture service. Pedone specializes in custom designs, like a silk-satin number with an Empire waist and A-line skirt ($1,000 to $4,000).

Amsale

625 Madison Ave., nr. 58th St., second fl.; 212-583-1700; amsale.com

Amsale Aberra's elegant gowns are favorites of society-page regulars, who covet their clean lines and sophisticated shapes. Kenneth Pool is their more contemporary line. Made-to-order and couture gowns range from $3,000 to $16,000. Alterations ($400 flat fee) not included.

Angelo Lambrou

96 E. 7th St., nr. First Ave.; 212-460-9870; angelolambrou.com

Adventurous types will love Angelo Lambrou's gowns, which reflect the designer';s travels and his exposure to Mediterranean and African cultures. Silk, chiffon, and charmeuse fabrics, elaborate beading, and perfect bias cuts make the dresses formal but not froufrou. Prices start at $1,800.

Anna Maier-Ulla-Maija Couture

32 W. 39th St., nr. Fifth Ave., eleventh fl.; 212-768-0707; ulla-maija.com

Known for its dramatic draping, Anna Maier-Ulla-Maija Couture makes a new pattern for each bride. The 39th Street location is the showroom, so call ahead to find out which department stores are the best places to visit in person (their gowns have retailed at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman). Prices range from $4,000 to $9,000. Alteration fees and tailoring options dependent on location.

Ann Hamilton Bridal Studio

212-625-8622; ann.hamilton.home.att.net

She no longer makes custom-designed gowns from scratch, but if you love Mom's sixties-era sleeves (and you're less fond of her dress), call Ann Hamilton, who restores, resizes, and restyles vintage and heirloom gowns ($600 to $2,000). Basic alterations start at $250.

Annique Couture Bridal

1375 Broadway, at 37th St.; 212-840-9535; annique-bridal.com

Designer Annique takes her background in sculpture and applies it to her pattern-making, sculpting unique dresses around a woman's figure. You can also try your own hand at design by bringing in a sketch of your dream dress. All-silk dresses start at $1,500. Make an appointment for any given Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., when most of the stock is slightly discounted.

Atelier Aimée

475 Park Ave., nr. 58th St.; 212-421-6100; aimeeusa.com

These veteran bridal designers found enormous success in Italy (Gianni Versace was a fan) before setting up a glitzy salon in New York last year. Their styles are meticulously shaped and very romantic; an imported two-piece gown with a taffeta skirt and beaded top runs about $6,000.

Banico

279 E. Houston St., nr. Clinton St.; baniconewyork.com

Behind this nondescript storefront you'll find custom wizards who'll make anything, in any color, style, or fabric you choose, in three to four months, or outfit you in ready-to-wear ($1,200 to $2,800). Designs run the gamut from sexy (a snug halter dress with slits) to more traditional strapless satin ball gowns with bows at the bustle.

Bergdorf Goodman

754 Fifth Ave., nr. 57th St.; 212-872-8957; bergdorfgoodman.com

The atmosphere in this store's Art Deco bridal salon is more modern than frilly (silk-covered walls, zebrawood doors, chrome trim) since the renovation two years ago. Bergdorf carries gowns from Oscar de la Renta, Ulla-Maija, Jenny Lee, Lela Rose, and many others. Specialized consultants are available to help with shoes, tiaras, and undergarments; dresses are $3,500 to $40,000. Alterations not included.

Birnbaum & Bullock

151 W. 25th St., nr. Seventh Ave., Ste. 2A; 212-242-2914; birnbaumandbullock.com

Classic, silk-lined wedding dresses come in 30 feminine styles ($2,500 to $6,000). A sleek, lace modified mermaid gown with abstract beading is ideal for the sophisticated brides that frequent the salon. Every gown is made to fit the client's measurements and proportions, rather than ordered in a general size and then altered. Because of this, Birnbaum & Bullock can successfully outfit every body type.

Blue

137 Ave. A, nr. 9th St.; 212-228-7744

Designer Christina Kara creates modern, edgy custom-made wares ($1,000 to $3,000) for hip brides in her tiny shop, offering an array of fabrics (silk, duchesse satin, lace) and styles (off the shoulder, mermaid, A-line).

The Bridal Garden/Sheltering Arms

54 W. 21st St., nr. Fifth Ave., Ste. 907; 212-252-0661

This nonprofit boutique offers designer gowns at greatly reduced prices. The organization carries samples and "once-worn" couture and designer gowns from big names like Amsale and Vera Wang ($295 to $2,995). Proceeds go to Sheltering Arms Children's Services. Alterations not included.

Bridal Reflections

286 Fifth Ave., at 30th St.; 212-764-3040 ; bridalreflections.com

After 33 successful years on Long Island, Bridal Reflections opened an additional full-service boutique in Manhattan. Their wide selection includes gowns by designers Ines Di Santo, Romona Keveza, Elizabeth Fillmore, Pronovias, St. Pucchi, and more; prices range from less than $1,000 to $20,000. Alterations not included.
