Profile
As the nation's largest metropolitan wildlife preserve, this world famous zoo boasts more than 4,000 animals on its sprawling 265 acres of land—much of which has been transformed into unique habitats for zebras and other unique creatures. The Congo Gorilla Forest is particularly noteworthy: Home to two families of lowland primates, it's the largest facsimile of an African rain forest in on the planet. Other highlights include daily penguin feedings and bee-eating birds catch their prey in mid-flight. You can get a bird's-eye view yourself with the Skyfari, a two-mile-long span of cable cars that soar high above the menagerie. During the winter months, when the Skyfari is out of commission, head to Tiger Mountain to check out the daily keeper demonstrations with the giant Siberians, or venture through the indoor, tropical Asian rainforest at Jungle World.
Butterfly GardenNearly one acre in size, the Butterfly Garden is home to a greenhouse, sculptured gardens, a giant insect carousel, and over 1,000 butterflies with free rein.
Overnight Safari
For a hefty $5000, an overnight safari can be arranged in the Congo Gorilla Forest for up to 15 kids or for families to observe the nocturnal habits of the residents. Call 718-220-6854.
Fees
Separate exhibit fees apply to the Congo Gorilla Forest, Children's Zoo, Skyfari, Zoo Shuttle (free for seniors), Butterfly Garden, Wild Asia Monorail, Bug Carousel, and Camel Rides.
