This genre, which mixes body sculpting with flexibility, strength training, balance work, and cardio, has suddenly become ubiquitous, but Exhale’s Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito have been preaching and teaching the fusion philosophy for twenty years. Their hourlong class moves from upper-body weight work to thigh and “seat” work at the barre, which leaves most students shaking and gasping for breath. Each bit of muscle building is followed by a stretch so the muscles formed are long and lean, not short and bulky. And there’s twenty minutes of solid core work at the end to make sure your abs are burning, too.

Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
